Referred to by locals as “the city in the country” Poway in San Diego County, California derived its name from the labels given to it by Luiseno and Diegueno Indians which were commonly accepted to mean the end of the valley or meeting of little valleys. A city since 1980, Poway lies close to the center of San Diego County, not far from the city of San Diego or the Pacific Ocean. Home to roughly 50,000, Poway has rich history beginning with its Native American legacy, continuing through and 1895 promise of a railroad that never came to be and a population explosion when the town finally established a dependable water supply and quickly became a most attractive place to live.
Shopping and Dining
Poway may be the city in the country, but shopping here leaves nothing to be desired. Creekside Plaza, Old Poway Village, Carriage Center West and Poway Plaza shopping centers are just a few sources for groceries and every day needs. If you’d rather shop local products, approximately 25 local farms come together every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer the freshest produce and farm products at the Poway Farmers Market. Local fare with Poway flair awaits residents and visitors at Filippis Pizza Grotto, House on the Hill, The Brigantine Seafood and Poway Sushi Lounge. Poway also provides the customary cuisine you need to feel right at home. Original Pancake House, Outback Steakhouse and Pizza Hut can all be found without leaving town.
Parks and Recreation

From June to August every year, sport and recreational fisherman can enjoy the unique experience of night fishing on the lake, and don’t miss the annual midnight Catfish Craze at the end of July. Active people preferring firmer ground will feel right at home at Poway Community Park which features the Swim Center, a skate park, tennis courts, ball fields and a 1.75 acre lighted and fenced dog park. The Community Center and Senior Center can also be found here with meeting rooms and an auditorium for classes and special events. Sportsplex USA offers the finest baseball, softball and soccer facilities in San Diego County. The state-of-the-art 15 acre facility hosts over 350,000 people each year through sports leagues, tournaments, corporate events, and company picnics. The Poway Sports Association (PSA) provides soccer, softball, baseball, rugby and more for youth and adult participation. PSA features Pop Warner and Little League teams as well. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are all great ways to spend your day on the more than 10 miles of trails offered through Sycamore Canyon Preserve and Goodan Ranch. Take it slower at Old Poway Park with a stroll through the peach orchards or a relaxed ride on the park’s 1907 Baldwin Number 3 Steam Locomotive. Another great reason to relocate to Poway, the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve sets aside 700 acres of rolling woodlands rich with stands of Oak trees and ideal for hiking and nature watching.
Poway is the perfect destination for horse enthusiasts boasting a rodeo, numerous riding stables and a location near plenty of wide open space. The Poway Rodeo held in September is a multi-day event with nearly 40 years of history behind it. Sycamore Canyon Stables is a luxury home for pleasure, competitive and trail riders alike. Bicycle riders, as well, find fellowship in Poway which is home to Tour de Poway bike ride, an October event with more than 25 years of history, currently drawing over 2,000 riders and offering courses from 18 to 100 miles. The Poway Center for the Performing Arts provides a venue for Poway High School’s drama productions as well as touring music groups and traveling productions such as regional and national ballet and theater troupes. Schools, Health, Transportation
Area parents covet the quality school system found in Poway. Poway Unified Schoold Districts, seven elementary and two middle schools prepare most students for Poway High School. Also available in Poway, the unique resources of Abraxis High School provides an alternative to students struggling in a traditional educational setting. Known as a continuation high school, Abraxis offers smaller class sizes, more individual attention and other support tools to guide struggling students to the success they desire. It’s not every city that offers an alternative program such as this, especially within the framework of the public school system. Metropolitan transit system provides inter and intra-city transportation in Poway with two established bus routes and available chartering services for private groups, employers and special events. Palomar Pomerado Hospital a 107-bed facility which partners with the much larger Palomar Medical Center in Escondido to cover all of North San Diego County providing top notch cardiology, labor and delivery, radiology, surgery, orthopaedics and rehabilitation services.
